This photograph, named 'American Gothic, Washington, D.C.' is one of Parks' most well-known. It ironically resembles the iconic painting 'American Gothic' by Grant Wood. The painting shows a Carpenter Gothic style house in Iowa, featuring two figures who seem traditional and emblematic of 20th century rural Americana. Parks' image is not only striking and a clever parody of the original painting, it emphasises the faults of the American system - depicting Ella Watson, a black menial worker standing demurely in front of the stars and stripes of the American flag.
